Mahjong Is Having a Moment — And We’re Here for It!
If it seems like everyone is suddenly talking about Mahjong, you’re not imagining it!
American Mahjong is having a major moment. New players are discovering the game, Mahjong groups are popping up everywhere, and friends are gathering around the table to learn what so many of us have known for years: Mahjong is so much more than a game.
It’s challenging. It’s social. It keeps you thinking. And most importantly, it brings people together.
Why Is Everyone Learning Mahjong?
There’s something special about sitting around a table with friends, putting away the phones and spending a few hours laughing, thinking, talking and — of course — trying to get that elusive Mahjong!
American Mahjong combines strategy and luck, which means no two games are ever exactly alike. Just when you think you have the perfect hand, someone takes the tile you need or the Charleston sends your game in an entirely different direction.
That’s part of the fun.
And once you learn, Mahjong becomes something you can enjoy for years. It can be a weekly game with friends, a girls’ night out, a vacation tradition, or simply a reason to get together.
“But It Looks So Complicated!”
I hear this all the time from new students.
The tiles, the Jokers, the Charleston and especially the National Mah Jongg League card can look completely overwhelming when you first sit down.
That’s why you take a lesson!
You don't have to understand everything at once. Learning American Mahjong is a process. We start with the tiles, learn how to read the card, go through the rules and Charleston, and then actually start playing.
Most importantly, you learn by doing.
And there is nothing quite like the first time you look down at your rack and realize, Wait…I know what I'm doing!
The 2026 Card Brings a Fresh Challenge
One of the things that makes American Mahjong so much fun is that the National Mah Jongg League releases a new card every year.
The 2026 card gives experienced players something new to study and keeps the game fresh, while beginners get to jump right in and learn the current card along with everyone else.
You don't have to memorize the card. The goal is to learn how to read it and how to recognize the possibilities in the tiles sitting on your rack.
